About this collection

The digital collection "Maps and charts of the Pavelló de la República Library" provides online access to the cartographic material preserved in CRAI's Pavelló de la República Library at the University of Barcelona. The digital collection includes more than 100 documents dated from the end of the nineteenth century to the 1950s. They are part of the general and the newspaper archives and included in the books of the Pavelló de la República. Of particular interest due to their historical relevance are the documents corresponding to the Second Republic period, such as the charts of Barcelona and Santa Coloma de Gramenet, featuring street and park names typical of the time, which disappeared under the Franco regime; or those of the Spanish Civil War, such as the charts representing the bombing of Barcelona during the months of April to June 1937, or the maps indicating the different fronts in Gandesa, Flix and Horta de Sant Joan during the battle of the Ebro. There is a curious map of Cuba dated in 1853 which is part of the "Atlas of Spain and its Overseas Possessions". At present, until access to the complete collection is available, roughly 75 of these maps can be consulted through the Digital Memory of Catalonia. Thanks to this digitization project, researchers and others interested in the collection’s can now enjoy access to materials that are hard to consult in block, due to their dispersion in books, newspapers and archive documents..
